Food Feed your puppy a high quality puppy food with not a lot of
fillers. I feed mine Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance Premium and supplement with Missing Link. I also feed the
Natural Balance food in the long rolls. My yorkies love it and would do anything for it. For treats I give fresh
fruits and vegtables such as green beans, carrots, broccoli, apples, strawberries, bananas (no grapes, raisins, garlic, mushroom,
onions, or macadamia nuts as they can make your puppy very sick). They also like yogurt and it is good for
the digestive system. Also never give a dog chocolate.
Hair Keep hair clipped from top one third of the ear tips. Excessive hair
on the hair tips may cause ear leather to flop over and will eventually break ear cartilage so that ears may be permanently
flopped. Also, trimming ear hair will make the ears appear smaller. Trim hair around rear end to prevent the
fur from getting soiled. Check the rear end for feces that had dried and keep this area clean as it could make
your puppy very sick and block bowel movements.
LOW BLOOD SUGAR Read
the article on hypoglycemia and stay alert for low blood sugar. Treat symptoms immediately with Karo Syrup and/or Nutrical
Seek professional help immediately as a yorkie can get sick very quickly from hypoglycemia and can even die from it if
not corrected as soon as possible.
SHOTS I start puppies on puppy shots at seven weeks of age and continue with
a shot every three weeks until puppy has had three rounds of shots. After that, a yearly booster shot is required.
DO NOT vaccinate for Leptospirosis. Many yorkies have had bad reactions to
the Lepto serum and frequently die from it. Consult with your vet about the appropriate age to vaccinate for
rabies. Remember, do not expose your puppy to other people or dogs or take it to places where there is a chance
it can come in to contact with something that could be potentially life threatening until it has had at least 3 sets of shots.
I know you are eager to show off your new baby, but a mistake like this could cost you your puppie's life. It is
not a risk worth taking.
COCCIDIA It is not unusual for the stress
of weaning or changing homes to cause an outbreak of Coccidia which is a one celled protozoan parasite that eats holes
in the intestinal wall. If your puppy develops diarrhea or loose stool with an unusually bad smell, ask your vet to
do a stool sample to check for Coccidia and treat it accordingly. Sometimes Coccidia does not always show up in
a stool check at the vet's office and will not show up until it has progressed to a life threatening stage so monitor
your puppy very close even though you get a negative result from the stool sample.
TEETH It is very common for puppies to retain their puppy teeth and to even reach adulthood
with two complete sets of teeth. Nubby nylon chew toys can help baby teeth come out. If baby teeth fail to come
out, you may have to have your vet pull them. This is best done when you take your puppy in the have them spayed or
neutered. Keep teeth clean by brushing your puppies teeth often. I use the little toothbrushes that you put on
the end of your finger. You can buy doggy toothpaste at any pet-store or you can take your dog in and have your vet
clean the teeth. Yorkies, as a breed have a tendency for dental problems, so it is important to take care of the teeth.
NO
COLLARS FOR YORKIES The trachea on a yorkie is very delicate and can collapse easily under pressure or stress. You should
never use a collar and leash on a yorkie. Instead, use a harness with a leash to avoid any undue pressure
on the trachea. Trachea problems are inherent with the breed, so great care must be taken.
Be aware that
there are numerous plants that are toxic to a puppy. Make sure your indoors as well as your yard is safe for your
new puppy to live in. Here is a list of plants and foods that are known to make a dog sick or even kill them.
